Job Summary/Purpose

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-A) provides enhanced pre-hospital care beyond the EMT-Basic level. Under the direction of KBEMS protocols and medical director, the EMT-A is authorized to administer approved medications and perform more advanced procedures to stabilize and transport patients to appropriate medical facilities.

 

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

·         Respond promptly to emergency and non-emergency calls for medical services.

·         Perform patient assessments and deliver advanced life support (ALS) within the EMT-A scope of practice.

·         Administer approved medications, perform advanced airway management and IV/IO access

·         Assist Paramedics in more complex procedures as needed.

·         Monitor patients during transport and ensure continuity of care en route to medical facilities.

·         Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care reports and interventions.

·         Inspect and maintain ambulances, equipment, and supplies.

·         Work collaboratively with EMTs, Paramedics, first responders, law enforcement, and hospital staff.

 

Role Minimum Qualifications

 

Required Education

·         High school diploma or equivalent

 

Required Licensure and Certifications               – At Hire

 

·         Active EMT-A license issued through Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services

·         BLS

 

Required Licensure and Certifications               - Post Hire

  • ICS 100/200/700/800
  • Sexual Awareness Training
  • Driver’s Training
  • Pediatric Head Trauma
  • HIV Training

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

·         Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

·         Must be able to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology for the English language.

·         Critical thinking skills.

·         Ability to work under stress.

·         Works cooperatively, communicates effectively.

·         Follows oral and written instructions.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in EMS or healthcare setting
  • Familiarity with electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) systems
