Candidates for this position must be available to work 40 hours in a 5-day work week. WEEKENDS ARE A MUST! Shifts include 7a-4p, 8a-5p, & 9a-6p. 

Position Overview:

Functions as an expert on evaluating, providing medical treatment for, and determining the disposition of all animals received by the Lexington Humane Society (LHS) and Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control (LFACC).  Must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma, submit to a background check, and be eligible for Kentucky State Euthanasia Specialist Certification.  Must maintain strict confidentiality.  Requires a strong commitment to the mission and purpose of LHS and LFACC.  Prior experience as a Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technician is desired.  This is a non-exempt position reporting to the Animal Welfare Manager.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Medical Care and Treatment of Animals
    • Prioritizes compassionate and humane treatment of animals
    • Evaluates animal condition and provides treatment for all animals on base
    • Determines age, breed, and sex of animals
    • Completes temperament assessments and partners with Behavior Coordinator when necessary
    • Checks animals for possible identification including microchips
    • Ensures ongoing medical treatment is provided
    • Completes veterinary procedures as directed by licensed Veterinarian
    • Processes and dispositions animals in a timely and efficient manner
    • Assists Veterinarian
    • Provides surgical assistance to Veterinarian when necessary
    • Administers vaccinations and medications
    • Follows all quarantine protocol
    • Performs euthanasia as necessary in accordance with all laws and regulations 
    • Humanely and respectfully disposes of euthanized animals
    • Completes timely, accurate, appropriate data entry into Shelter Buddy 
    • Ensures records for animals in care are accessible, current, and accurate
    • Ensures all drug logs and records are completed per state and federal regulations
    • Disposes of medical waste in a proper fashion 
    • Manages an efficient, effective, and prudent program within a narrow nonprofit budget 
    • Uses appropriate safety and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Maintains company equipment with care and respect
    • Completes all activities consistent with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
