Job Summary/Purpose
The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for the skilled and competent delivery of Respiratory Services ordered by a physician in accordance with established protocols set by the facility or other health care provider in the treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation and care of patients with the Cardiopulmonary system. These services may include, but are not limited to: Therapeutic and Diagnostic use of Medical gases and administration apparatus, environmental control systems, humidification and aerosols, administration of drugs and medications of the cardiopulmonary system, ventilatory support including maintenance and management of life support systems, bronchopulmonary drainage and exercises, assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, maintenance of natural airways including the insertion of and maintenance of artificial airways. The most important service/product expected of position is the delivery of consistent high-quality respiratory care and diagnostic services to the assigned patient care population.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
· Provides appropriate age specific and culturally oriented patient care to population served.
· Completes work assignment in a timely manner under normal supervision.
· Performs all aspects of oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation. Monitors, maintains, provides, and documents the care.
· Performs all therapeutic aspects of respiratory care therapy (including intensive care procedures)..
· Performs a patient respiratory assessment on assigned patients when therapy is initiated, every 12 hour shift and when indicated based on condition. Assesses the respiratory status of assigned patients through physical exam, chart review of history/physical, and response to ordered therapies. Assesses learning needs of patient/family; Plans, provides, evaluates and documents patient/family education.
· Performs diagnostic exams as ordered per physician (Holter monitoring/holter scanning, electroencephalogram, pulmonary function testing, pulse oximetry, Cardiac stress testing).
· Provides appropriate respiratory care (age specific) to patient population served (pediatric through geriatric).
· Demonstrates competence in the use of all equipment, and testing techniques employed in the delivery of patient care. Demonstrates skills in measurement of ventilatory volumes, pressures, and flows. Demonstrates competence in the collection and analysis of blood for gas transport and acid-base determinations. Demonstrates the ability to take remedial and corrective action when necessary. Understands and ensures that all principles of Quality Control are correctly applied prior to samples testing and result reporting. Demonstrates competence in other physiologic monitoring of the Cardiopulmonary system and Neurodiagnostic testing (EEG, Stress tests, Holter monitoring).
· Orders and stocks all drugs and supplies used by the department. Restock crash carts and intubation boxes. Orders office supplies and other non-charged departmental supplies.
· Adheres to the following environment of care standards: Adequate knowledge of Safety Policies and Procedures. Adequate knowledge of Security issues. Adequate knowledge of proper response to chemical spills and the use of MSDS’s. Demonstrates adequate knowledge of employee role in internal/external disaster situations. Adequate knowledge of code requirements – concerning fire exits and corridor clearance. Follows all infection control practices including handwashing techniques, standard precautions, disposal of sharps, etc.
General responsibilities: Reports to work for scheduled shift on time and prepared to assume responsibilities. Reports to work in proper uniform or attire. Follows hospital policy for reporting sick or absent 100% of the time. Leaves for meal break on time and returns on time. Varies work schedule to meet the needs of the department. Schedules time off with the managers’ approval. Adheres to hospital attendance/tardiness policies 100% of the time. Wear ID badge in a visible location at all times. Knocks before entering a room or office. Keeps voice down, does not shout or use improper language.
Role Minimum Qualifications
Required Education
· Graduate of accredited Respiratory Therapy program
Required Licensure and Certifications -At Hire
