Job Summary/Purpose
The Charge Nurse provides shift-based leadership, clinical expertise, and operational oversight for the nursing unit. This role ensures safe, high-quality patient care while supporting staff, coordinating assignments, and serving as a resource for clinical and administrative issues during the shift. The Charge Nurse collaborates with physicians, interdisciplinary team members, and hospital leadership to ensure patient care aligns with Joint Commission (TJC) standards, hospital policies, and state/federal regulations.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
· Assign and adjust patient care assignments based on patient acuity, staffing levels, and staff competency.
· Serve as clinical resource and mentor for nursing staff, providing guidance, support, and feedback.
· Ensure adherence to hospital policies, procedures, and accreditation standards.
· Monitor quality of care and patient safety, escalating issues to Nurse Manager as appropriate.
· Facilitate communication between physicians, nurses, ancillary staff, and families.
· Assist with admissions, transfers, and discharges to ensure safe, efficient patient flow.
· Oversee documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
· Support staff in managing emergencies, rapid responses, and codes; serve as first responder and leader until physician/rapid response team arrives.
· Participate in performance improvement initiatives, audits, and compliance activities.
· Provide direct patient care as needed to support staffing demands.
· Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment in compliance with infection prevention standards.
· Communicate shift reports to incoming Charge Nurse and Nurse Manager.
· Monitor supplies and equipment availability; coordinate with support staff to ensure readiness.
Role Minimum Qualifications
Required Education
· Associate’s degree in nursing
Required Licensure and Certifications – At Hire
· Active RN license issued through KBN
· BLS, ACLS
